Back into baking

It has been nearly one year since I created my website. At that time I was so excited to be able to share with you my passion for cake decorating through blogging. That was one of my goals for 2013. Then I only had one more blog post after that....oh well.

You know what they say "having good intentions is better than not having any at all". Or maybe that is what I say.  Either way, I am going to try to do this again.

I am not only a cake decorator I am a full time mom, wife and HR Manager. I enjoy the sport of triathlon and find myself with limited time to hone my craft.
I currently have one son attending Northern Arizona University and another who attends and plays football at the University of Arizona. My daughter will graduate High School this year and then she will attend Pima Community College in the Fall.
So as you can see, my cake plate is full. However, I still have a passion for it and I enjoy challenging myself.

So here I go again, putting my free time on the line and dusting off all my tools and equipment to be able to, at least through the Spring and Summer months, not only get my decorating therapy in but provide some sweet decorations for your celebrations.

Let's see if I can keep this momentum going. This will be an excellent year! Bring it on!

Vintage Birthday

Sometimes a design idea escapes me until I am actually in progress of putting it all together. This was one of them. I knew I needed to make a 50th birthday cake with a Vintage theme. I wanted old signs, something to represent the recipients love of cycling and basketball and make a mention of his dream to one day have a Harley Davidson.

Originally I thought I would make a fondant motorcycle and place it on the top of the cake but that proved to be a bit of a challenge.

So as I was making my vintage signs I decided to paint on a motorcycle as well as bike and basketball elements.

I was very pleased with how my "Harley" turned out since it was done free hand and I only had a picture to go by. I am slowly mastering the art of painting on fondant. This is quickly becoming my new favorite technique.

Finally

The time has finally come...my website is here.

It has been a long time in the making (in my head) and I finally had some time to sit down and compile all the details that I need in order to share my passion with everyone. Thanks to Weebly for making such an easy to use web design platform.

Cake decorating for me is much like that of an painter or sculptor. It is an expression of my creativity and one that I enjoy sharing with everyone. It provides me a creative outlet and  I can spend hours in the kitchen creating the details. The smallest of details, to me, are some of the most impacting parts of the design. The techniques out there are amazing and I enjoy learning them and getting a chance to implement them in a new design when I have the chance.

It is rare for me to make a cake that is a replica of one I had already made, I believe in being original. Every cake should represent the person(s) that is being celebrated and no one is the same so why should my cakes be the same. Much of what I put into a design is completely free flowing. I have this tenancy to get a little too caught up in a cake and put more into the design than is expected. I probably should cut back on that a little. :)

For many years now my business has been mostly of a generous nature. I enjoy making and giving cakes away. I will continue to give them away but I have decided to start getting "serious" and make it officially a business with a structured pricing model and a way that my clients can provide feeedback.

A wise 17 year old girl wrote this to me at Christmas this past year:
"Dear Mom, Don't give up on your dream. You are incredible and you will succeed in whatever you do! Everyone loves your cakes, don't be afraid to make the prices reasonable. I believe in you so...once you find a location I PROMISE to help you set up and I PROMISE to be your first employee. I  love you and I know you can an will achieve your dream <3."

This is the beginning of the next 23+ years of my business, I have a feeling my first employee will be my daughter Shelby. It is a good thing I do this from home, she won't have a far commute to work. I just hope she finds the passion I have for making cakes and can be my sidekick for many years along the way.

This is for you Shelby. Love Mom

My name is Victoria but I have been called Torie most of my life.
Outside of my passion for making "edible art" I am first a wife and mother but my other passions are endurance sports. I am a 70.3 Ironman finisher. I love the multi-sport especially the bike and I am currently a member of the Desert Tri Girls in Tucson, AZ.

It is quite the balancing act to have a family, full-time job, decorate cakes and train but they all bring me great joy.
